Across from Houghton, Michigan, the Quincy Mining Company smelter and docks pressed against the north shore of the Portage Lake embayment of Lake Superior at Hancock in the early 1900s. The mine works were partly visible on the top of the hill. At that time, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was the world's major copper producer and led the United States in iron ore production.
